The name says it all about these instruments, they are highly accurate devices used for measuring weight in laboratory pharmaceutical and healthcare settings. Their accuracy has a range between 0.1mg - 0.01mg and most devices have a draft shield or weighing chamber to prevent the very small samples being weighed from being disturbed by changes in air flow. These devices are critical for use in several analytical applications such as differential weighing, density determination, pipette calibration, parts counting, animal weighing, check weighing and percent weighing so their accuracy is of paramount importance.

Analytical balances should not be confused with precision balances, they are slightly different in that analytical balances have finer readability, are a lot more sensitive to changes, and can detect smallest of variations in items under test. Precision balances have more variety in body style, model types and options, but they do not offer the same level of readability or accuracy when compared with analytical balances.
