Calibration weight sets are used almost exclusively as a standard for the calibration of a range of weighing equipment, they do however sometimes provide a useful comparison guide for improvised weights or devices where the weight is at first unknown. These weight sets are manufactured to extremely tight tolerances and usually take the form of stainless steel or brass cylinders.
There are three main types of calibration weights all of which are classified and approved by technical standards organisations such as NIST, OIML, ASTM and UKAS. The relevant classification of each weight type depends on the resolution of the weighing device (scale, balance etc) and the accuracy needed to correctly calibrate said device. Classifications are as follows:
Calibration of weights is key across a broad range of sectors as the accuracy of these instruments is relied upon for checking the accuracy of scales and other pieces of weighing equipment. Calibrationhouse therefore offers a comprehensive test weight calibration service at a variety of standards and weighing classes.
